Strategizing to sensitize the community on how they can prepare for effective response by using their social resources that exist within around them, IRW is working with some important institutions like hospitals, schools and markets which are at risk of urban hazards. The project aims to making them prepared to be the first responders during an emergency in their institution and that through their own social resources, because once the community starts recognizing and utilizing their own social resources, only then they will walk towards sustainable cultural safety through collective approach. Surma Super Market at Ward#17 of Sylhet is one of the markets where the community recently conducted a mock drill on Fire Safety and Evacuation on the 2^nd February, 2012.

The entire effort taken up by the community was the result of a collective utilization of social resource from different dimensions i.e. in terms of financial support and coordination. Mock Drill is one of the major activities in Sylhet and it serves three purposes at a time, it increases awareness among the people, and demonstrates skill to keep the participants active and increase coordination among different stakeholders. This is just one good example where the community people are making use of social resources and taking the lead role in preparing themselves for reducing risks against different hazards. OXFAM

Oxfam GB under the DIPECHO VI action plan has been implementing the project “Building Community Resilience to Floods in Central Region of Bangladesh” supported by ECHO since July 2010. To ensure effective community mobilization and awareness, Oxfam GB has developed various IEC materials including flipbooks, tin plates and board games. Community volunteers trained both on technical and Behavior Change Communication (BCC) under the project aspect are using these IEC material for community mobilization and awareness in project villages.
